The Battle Creek Police Department is warning residents to keep an eye on their mailboxes, after a string of thefts have been reported.

Sgt. Chris Rabbit says that in Battle Creek, Emmett Township and all of Calhoun County, there have been reports of suspects going from mailbox to mailbox and sifting through them, apparently looking for checks or gift cards; some of the suspects may even be posing as mail carriers.

Citizens are asked to be aware of these potential thieves, since many people are expecting their tax returns via the mail at this time of year. In order to protect yourself, steps can be taken such as having your tax return deposited directly to your bank, or buying a slotted locking mailbox.

If you see suspicious activity, contact police or Silent Observer; if you think your mail has been stolen, you need to contact police and the Post Office.
