A man is now on trial in Battle Creek in connection to an alleged rape that took place 15 years ago.

WWMT reports 34-year-old Jeffrey Wimberly was in Calhoun County Court Tuesday; he’s charged with four counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Prosecutors say that in 2002, Wimberly and his cousin Larry Martin had gone to buy a gun from a 17 year old woman, and all three were in a car together; that’s when Wimberly allegedly began raping her, with Martin holding her hands so she couldn’t fight back.

Wimberly was implicated in this crime recently after his DNA was found in an untested rape kit that was administered to the victim after the alleged assault. The kit was tested as part of a statewide effort to test these kits, and solve cold cases; that effort was started by Attorney General Bill Schuette.

Larry Martin is being tried separately in this case on similar charges.
