Battle Creek Teen Critical After Shooting Himself During Standoff
A Battle Creek teen is in the hospital after allegedly shooting himself during a standoff with police.
WWMT says that Battle Creek Police Officers were called to the area of Washington and Hamblin Streets around 9pm Tuesday, after family members called and said the 19-year-old had access to firearms and might be suicidal. Reportedly, he had been released from treatment for mental health issues a few weeks prior.
When police arrived they found the teen with a gun on his hip, and the teen became agitated when police attempted to negotiate with him. Less-than-lethal bean bag round were fired at him, but that didn’t prevent him from shooting himself in the head.
The BCPD says that the teen was taken immediately to Bronson Kalamazoo, where he was listed in critical condition.
