Sentencing took place Monday for a Battle Creek man convicted of killing his former best friend.

The Battle Creek Enquirer reports that 30-year-old Stephen Getter was in Calhoun County Court Monday, and the judge sentenced him to serve life in prison without parole in the death of Robert Barosso. Getter was convicted of first degree murder in August, after prosecutors say that he shot Barosso in the back 5 times, before stabbing him in the head repeatedly in December of last year.

Barosso was reported missing for over a week, before Getter eventually led police to the body. Getter insisted that his actions were in self-defense, after the two had agreed to fight and he claims Barosso pulled a knife on him. However, the judge said that the act was premeditated and called it “absolutely barbaric”.

Barosso’s mother, Lori Gauthier said at the sentencing that she hopes he “has a hard brutal life in prison”.
