The heavy rains that struck the area recently have caused a bit of a wastewater problem in Calhoun County.

The City of Albion says on their website Wednesday that an “unanticipated discharge of wastewater” has resulted, leading to partially treated wastewater "in its final stages of clarification" finding its way into the Kalamazoo River watershed. The City says that the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and Calhoun County Health Department have been notified, but the full extent of the discharge isn’t known at this time.

Whether residents could experience and effects of this discharge is unknown.

Officials say the discharge might have been caused in part by construction that is taking place at the Albion Wastewater Treatment Plant.
