A hostage incident has left three law enforcement officers with gunshot wounds and one victim dead.

On Sunday December 1, at approximately 10:00 p.m. officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, along with the Michigan State Police, responded to the 6300 block of Proctor Avenue, in Comstock Township, to assist the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office. Information had been received that an unknown person had entered a home and was armed with a gun. There were multiple residents in the home at the time. Upon hearing gunfire inside the house, officers entered the house in order to rescue the hostages.

Three officers were hit by gunfire and were transported to nearby hospitals. The suspect was taken into custody. One hostage was sot and killed prior to officers entering the home.

One of the officers struck by gunfire was Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officer, PSO Caleb Jones, a three year department veteran. He suffered a non-life threatening injury and continues to be treated at a local hospital. The second officer is with the Michigan State Police and the third officer's agency has not yet been identified.

A spokesperson with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said the department is very thankful that all officers survived the incident, but that they mourn the loss of the victim. The spokesperson went on to say that the officers acted courageously; and, as they are trained to do, they were able to successfully rescue the two other victims.

This was one of two incidents that proved to be dangerous for law enforcement officers in Kalamazoo and Calhoun County over the long holiday weekend. In the early morning hours of Saturday, a Battle Creek Police officer was shot three times while trying to apprehend a suspect with multiple outstanding warrants. The officer was hospitalized and has since undergone surgery and is in stable condition.
